WNBA: Days After Demanding “Pay Us What You Owe Us”, Game Halted and Fan Ejected Because a Player Lost her Wig on the Court

A fan was reportedly ejected from a WNBA game in Washington, D.C. on Sunday between the Phoenix Mercury and Washington Mystics after several Mercury players complained to the refs that someone in the seats behind them had made fun of Mercury player Kahleah Copper after she lost her wig on the court during the third quarter, bringing the game to a halt while she ran to the locker room trying to secure the wig to her head.

The Mercury (16-9) defeated the Mystics 88-72 (12-13). This first quarter photo shows Copper being guarded by the Mystics’ Jade Melbourne, the player who would end up accidently pulling her wig with the mile long extensions off her head in the third quarter.

The incident comes just over a week after WNBA players at the league’s All Star game wore t-shirts with the message, “Pay us what you owe us.”

The entire scene is surreal. A player wearing a wig with mile long extensions that gets tangled up with and accidently pulled off by an opposing player. The player picks up her wig and is seen running to the locker room holding the wig to her head. Meanwhile, the announcers are doing their best to NOT mention what just happened. A timeout is called and the game halted. The camera eventually focuses on a referee speaking to arena security, saying Phoenix players heard a fan making fun of the player–without saying what happened–and want the fan ejected.

Referee: “The players are saying, they made fun of her and the situation on the floor.”

The video ends with Copper back on the bench, wig in place.

Will Cain commented:

“There so much clown world ridiculousness going on in this clip:

a.) running off the court bc your wig fell
b.) fan getting ejected for making fun
BUT MOST OF ALL
c.) the announcers won’t even say what happened. Like it was too taboo.

Taboo is an apt description as there is no reporting on the incident by the traditional sports media. Outkick is one of the outlets reporting on it (excerpt):

It’s hard to take the WNBA seriously with its unique brand of dysfunction.

A scene from Sunday’s game between the Washington Mystics and Phoenix Mercury spread like wildfire — showing a player losing their WIG during the game, causing a halt in the action.

It also elicited a questionable response from the broadcasters, who noticeably avoided discussing the weave-induced stoppage.

Internet sleuths identified the player as Phoenix’s Kahleah Copper, who ran off the court and into the locker room when her wig was SNATCHED by Phoenix’s (sic, Mystics’) Jade Melbourne, who was trying to beat a screen.

The official WNBA ‘Full Game Highlights’ reel skips over the third quarter wig fail and fan ejection incident that took place when the score was 55-53, Phoenix leading Washington:
