“Sorry About That”: ESPN Announcer Covering WNBA Game Apologizes to Colleague For Saying On Air, “That’s What Makes America Great”

ESPN announcer Rebecca Lobo apologized on air for saying, “That’s what makes America great,” during ESPN coverage of Sunday’s game between the Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces.

Lobo’s comment was met with an icy silence by WNBA play-by-play announcer Pam Ward who was apparently triggered by the mention of “make America great.”

Before the era of leftist political correctness and Trump derangement syndrome, it was common for Americans to praise the U.S. for tolerating differences of opinion by saying, “That’s what makes America great.”

Ward: “So they disagree with you?”

Lobo: “They do, and I disagree with them, and that’s fine. That’s what makes America great, right, Pam Ward?”

(Long, icy silence.)

Lobo: “I should rephrase that.”

Ward: “Yes.”

Crosstalk.

Ward: “Yeah, I did think differences of opinion are perfectly fine.

Lobo: “Yes, that’s a better way to say it. Sorry about that.”

Lobo, a former WNBA All-Star and member of the 1996 Olympic gold medal winning women’s basketball team, has been an ESPN commenter since 2004.

Ward, a sports journalist, has been with ESPN since 1996, covering the WNBA and women’s college basketball and softball, as well as hosting numerous shows over the years.
