Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran was behind two attempts to assassinate President Trump.
In an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier on Sunday, Netanyahu said that the mullahs in Tehran tried and failed twice to assassinate the two-time president.
Here is a transcript of the exchange:
NETANYAHU: These people who chant, death to America, tried to assassinate President Trump twice, kill 241 of your Marines in Beirut, killed and injured thousands of American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, try to bomb a restaurant in Washington D.C., chant death to America, burn the American flag, do you want these people to have nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them to your cities?
Of course not. So we’re defending ourselves, but we’re also defending the world.”
BAIER: You just said Iran tried to assassinate President Trump twice.
Do you have intel that the assassination attempts on President Trump were directly from Iran?
NETANYAHU: Through proxies, yes. Through their intel, yes. They want to kill him.
For them, [Trump is] enemy number one. Look, they also tried to kill me, but I’m his junior partner.
They understand that President Trump is a great threat to Iran’s plans to weaponize nuclear weapons and use them.

Netanyahu was likely not referring to the assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, but rather a plot involving the an Iranian operative named Farhad Shakeri.
Last November, the Department of Justice charged Shakeri over the plot, alleging that he was “tasked by regime to direct a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.”
“The charges announced today expose Iran’s continued brazen attempts to target U.S. citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran,” former FBI Director Christopher Wray said at the time.
Netanyahu’s appearance comes several days after Israel launched a series of major missile strikes on Iran with the stated objective of disabling its nuclear capabilities and ultimately removing the regime from power.
