Elon Musk to Pull Back on Political Spending: “I Think I’ve Done Enough”

After spending about $260 million helping elect President Trump and Republicans last year, Elon Musk said Tuesday he does not plan on spending large amounts of money on elections, saying, “I think I’ve done enough,” but did not entirely rule out future spending.

Musk and his America super PAC successfully focused on key swing states, most notably Pennsylvania, to help get Trump and a Republican House and Senate elected in 2024, but fell short in a hard fought judicial election in Wisconsin this year.

Musk recently stepped back from his Trump administration Special Government Employee role of leadership of DOGE to focus on his businesses, especially Tesla which was the target of violent attacks over his efforts to reform the federal government and rein in deficit spending.

Musk made his remarks in response to a question by Bloomberg during a remote video interview for the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha.

Excerpt from CNBC’s report on Musk’s comments:

But when asked at the Qatar Economic Forum if he will continue spending at that level in upcoming elections, Musk said he would not.

“I think, in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said.

When asked why, he said, “I think I’ve done enough.”

But Musk, the world’s richest man, said he may change his mind at some point.

“Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it,” he said.

“I do not currently see a reason,” he added.

Musk also spoke about his commitment to remain head of Tesla for the next five years and the controversies surrounding his pay and work with DOGE:

Musk is still shocked by the virulent response to his work with DOGE, saying, “I’ve not harmed anyone.”

Musk said that the people who perpetrated–as well as those who funded and organized–the violent attacks on Tesla and death threats against him will be prosecuted and go to prison, saying, “Don’t worry, we’re coming for you!”
