In January, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signaled his commitment to enforcing President Donald Trump’s America First agenda and efforts to deport illegals by calling a special session of the legislature.
During remarks to the press at the time, DeSantis stated, “We have a responsibility to be in this fight. State and local officials in Florida MUST HELP the Trump administration enforce our nation’s immigration law.”
DeSantis, however, expressed frustration over the special legislative session.
Speaker of the House Daniel Perez (R) and Senate Leader Ben Albritton (R) attempted to dilute key enforcement aspects and transfer immigration enforcement powers to the Agriculture Commissioner.
Legislative leaders wrote a weak immigration bill that vests enforcement in the Commissioner of Agriculture, which creates a conflict of interest given the agriculture industry’s affinity for cheap, illegal foreign labor.

In a press conference on Friday, DeSantis announced an agreement with ICE on illegal immigration enforcement. The agreement states that state and local officers will partner with ICE officials under their 287 (g) program, which authorizes ICE to delegate them to work specified immigration officer functions under ICE oversight.
ICE can also now identify and deport already incarcerated criminal illegal aliens.
“This program allows ICE enforcement and removal operations to partner with state and local enforcement agencies to identify and remove already incarcerated criminal aliens who are eligible for removal before they are released into our community,” DeSantis stated.
“This agreement will give FHP expanded power and authority to interrogate any suspected alien or person believed to be an alien as to their right to be entered in the United States.”
“If they are found to be in violation of proper immigration status, they will be further detained and processed for state or federal offenses.”
“This means that FHP State law enforcement officers will be empowered to arrest and detain aliens attempting to unlawfully lawfully enter the United States, such as through ports of entry or via waters off Florida’s coastline.”
“They can also deliver detained illegal immigrants without any unnecessary delays for examination by immigration enforcement authorities for further screening.”
