The European Union has no other business to conduct, it seems, than to be condemning Russia, and worrying and fretting about its imaginary invasions of the continent.
In this sense, it’s no surprise that on Monday (14), EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas threatened European leaders if they participate in Moscow’s ‘Victory Day’ on May 9, an event that will be celebrating 80 years of the Nazi defeat in WW2.
Kallas urged them to ‘show solidarity with Ukraine’ instead.
Politico reported:
“According to Russian media, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government has extended invitations to the leaders of China, India and Brazil — as well as to EU country Slovakia and to Serbia, which aspires to join the 27-member bloc.
‘What was also discussed very clearly, and said by different member states, is that any participation in the 9th May parades or celebrations in Moscow will not be taken lightly on the European side, considering that Russia is really waging a full-scale war in Europe’, Kallas told journalists in Luxembourg after a gathering of foreign ministers.”
Kallas warned potential members of the bloc not to join the celebrations in Moscow.
“POLITICO reported earlier Monday that Ukraine was inviting top EU officials and leaders to Kyiv on May 9 to counter Russia’s military celebrations — a call echoed by Kallas after her meeting with EU foreign ministers.
‘I’ve also called all the member states but also representatives of the institutions to visit Kyiv as much as possible to show really our solidarity and that we are with Ukraine’, she said.”
While Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán has declared that he will not go, yesterday (15) Slovak PM Robert Fico defiantly declared that ‘no one can stop him from going to Moscow on May 9’.
The Telegraph reported:
“Serbia could be blocked from joining the European Union if its president travels to Russia next month for Vladimir Putin’s Victory Day parade.”
After Russian state media reported that Serbia’s Aleksandar Vucic would be in attendance, European officials started bullying him, saying a visit ‘would be a breach of the bloc’s membership criteria and would derail his country’s EU ambitions’.
“’We need to ensure that they understand that certain decisions come at a cost’, said Jonatan Vseviov, the secretary-general of Estonia’s ministry of foreign affairs. ‘The consequence is them not joining the European Union’.
He added: ‘Russians have been working hard to get people to attend … For us this will be an important litmus test. Basically, what we look at is whether or not they are on our side or playing on the other team’.”
