A British Labour Party politician has been arrested on suspicion of rape and child sex offenses.
His arrest was confirmed by a Labour Party spokesperson, who said he had been suspended effective immediately.
“Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labour Party upon being informed of his arrest,” the statement read:
“We cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.”
Norris, a former Labour minister who unseated Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg in last year’s general election, was taken into custody following a police raid on his constituency residence on Friday.
Authorities confirmed he was also arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Avon and Somerset Police provided further details:
In December 2024, we received a referral from another police force relating to alleged non-recent child sex offences having been committed against a girl.
Most of the offences are alleged to have occurred in the 2000s, but we’re also investigating an alleged offence of rape from the 2020s.
An investigation, led by officers within Operation Bluestone, our dedicated rape and serious sexual assault investigation team, remains ongoing and at an early stage.
The victim is being supported and given access to any specialist help or support she needs.
A man, aged in his sixties, was arrested on Friday (April 4) on suspicion of sexual offences against a girl (under the Sexual Offences Act 1956), rape (under the Sexual Offences Act 2003), child abduction and misconduct in a public office.
He’s been released on conditional bail for enquiries to continue.
Norris previously served as MP for Wansdyke between 1997 and 2010, later becoming Mayor of the West of England in 2021, a role he is set to step down from later this year.
According to his constituency website, he trained with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and worked as both a teacher and child protection officer.
He has previously spoken in unflaterring terms about President Trump, comparing him to Boris Johnson who he described as “stain on our great country’s reputation.”
“Even as he exits, he continues to show no contrition,” he complained at the time. “The similarities with Donald Trump are stark.”
